Being the first kid on the block to get ahold of a hot new technology has its upside, but it also often means buying something that's too big, too bulky, and too expensive (remember the first VCRs?). That's why we like the top offering in Sony's slick new Vaio FZ notebook line. The company's second attempt at a Blu-ray-equipped portable avoids the chunk factor—at less than six pounds, it's the lightest HD laptop out there—and it costs no more than a decently equipped PowerBook.
Thanks to an efficient Intel Centrino Duo processor, the FZ can last up to four hours on a single battery charge. Stretch your juice even farther by using Windows Vista's new (and shockingly innovative) "SideShow" function, which goes straight to movie mode without booting up the system. (A music player and photo viewer are also accessible this way.) Add an integrated camera and microphone—not to mention Blu-ray-burning capability—and it's one killer portable multimedia machine, even if all you really want to do is catch a flick on your next red-eye. Just beware: With that Blu-ray resolution and a crisp, 15.4-inch screen, you may not get much sleep.
